About the City Population Ranking Data

The city population rankings in this quiz are based on official population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. The data uses the latest available City and Town Population Totals from the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program, which provides annual population estimates for incorporated places and related local government areas in the United States. For each state, cities are ranked by their estimated resident population, and the top 10 cities are selected as quiz answers. The rankings are based on city proper population, not metropolitan area population, which means they reflect the population within official city or incorporated place boundaries rather than the larger surrounding metro region. Because Census estimates are updated regularly, city rankings may change when a new data vintage is released. The current dataset is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 city and town population estimates, covering population estimates through July 1, 2025.
